An unforgettable journey to Nang Yuan Island

81

Located in the south of Thailand, a 20-minute boat ride from Koh Tao, Koh Nangyuan has a unique beauty. Here, the two mountains in the middle of the sea are linked by fine white sand. I have known the Nang Yuan island through the pictures on the tourism site of Thailand and the introduction of some local friends, but I had the opportunity visiting this beautiful small island until the third times travelling to Thailand.

How to get there

The night bus departed from Khao San Road – the Bangkok’s famous West Street at 9 o’clock. The bus arrived at the Lomprayah ferry terminal early in the morning when it was still dark. Passengers on two bus trips gathered together waiting for the first ship of the day.

Nang Yuan Island is about 2 hours travelling by boat, including three separate small islands, which are connected with white sand and coral shell. This is a private island. There is only one resort – Nang Yuan Resort. The pathways in the island are mainly made of wood, connected by nails and attached to large hollows to float on the water. There are stairs leading to private homes or bungalows, which are hewn into the natural cliffs of the island. The way from reception desk to the resort is the white sand beach, created by many coral from the sea that stuck on the shore long time so you should walk slowly.

What to explore

In the afternoon, it was still hot but there were many people sunbathing after lunch. Thailand has the same climate as South Vietnam, summer is all year-round. On the first day to Nang Yuan island, my skin was flushed and burned. Many visitors especially white ones, were extremely interested in tanning, the result of a day exposed to the sun.Nang Yuan Island and nearby Turtle Island (Koh Tao) are blessed with colorful coral reefs below sea level, attracting millions of visitors every year to scuba diving. There are many tourists who have registered to take part in 2-3 tours of coral reefs.

As the two sides of the sand strands linking Nang Yuan Island with its suburbs have rocks and coral reefs close to the shore, visitors often drop by this island to explore the new coral reef after lunch. I sat at the balcony of the bungalow, listened to the sound of the sea bumping into the cliff and felt completely relaxed. There were so many people on the beach but the space was very quiet, it seemed everyone enlisted enjoy the peace.

Beacause this island is isolated from the mainland and other islands and a private tourist resort, so there are no restaurants or supermarkets on Nang Yuan Island. Guests on the island are not allowed to bring food or drink to buy outside. I bought the traditional Thai rice with roasted chicken and tempura shrimp from the resort kitchen. Nang Yuan Resort’s restaurant is designed in Asian style with a bit of Chinese style with wood carvings.

At night, outside the reception area and restaurant, the island sank into the shadows, with only light blue lights leading the way and lights from the faraway rooms. I chose a small table near the coast to enjoy the sea breeze mixed with light drizzly.

Early the next morning, I woke up as the sun began to shine behind the clouds. The air was so fresh. I decided to climb to the top of the moutain to see the panoramic view of Nang Yuan Island.

Sitting on the top of a mountain, you can see the panoramic view of Koh Nang Yuan. In the early morning, there were no visitors going up the mountain to admire the scenery, so I could freely enjoy the fresh air and quiet until the sun comes out of the clouds.

I have to say that I was very impressed by the professional tourism of Thailand. Koh Nang Yuan is no exception. I will remember the picturesque scenery with long white sand that connects three separate islands. It was so beautiful.

It was an unforgettable trip to Nang Yuan Island and I will come back here if I get a chance.
